"Ethiopia will not accept it”
Ethiopia rejects decision and will not implement
resolutions to be passed tomorrow at an emergency special session of the UN Human Rights Council
The House of Peoples' Representatives held a discussion yesterday regarding the proceedings of the special meeting to be held tomorrow regarding the human rights situation in Tigray State.
During the meeting, Ethiopian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Mahlet Hailu made a clear statement on the Ethiopian government's position.
The special meeting convened in Ethiopia did not comply with the rules of procedure of the House and was used by the Human Rights Council for political purposes other than its purpose and to discriminate against member states.
In the same vein, he said, it violates his institutional responsibilities by pursuing various practices
Condemns member states for their actions and the efforts of some countries to pursue their political interests under the guise of human rights.
He also called on the council to do its part to uphold the institutional principles.
"For these reasons, the Ethiopian government will not accept the emergency special meeting convened by Ethiopia and the outcome of this meeting," said Ambassador Mahlet.
“Therefore, a special meeting and the draft resolution to be decided by the council at this meeting As it is in direct conflict with Ethiopia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, we demand the cancellation of both the meeting and the draft resolution," said Ambassador Mahlet.
"It is a denial of recognition " said EHRC
The Ethiopian Commission for Human Rights has written an open letter to the President of the UN Human Rights Council, Nazat Khan, to members of the Human Rights Council and to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michel Bachelet.
In a letter, ISMCO stated that a re-investigation of human rights abuses in the northern part of the country by November 3, 2021, would be a rejection of a joint investigation by the UN Human Rights Council and the Ethiopian Commission for Human Rights.
The commission said the investigation should not be repeated, but should be done so that victims can recover, return to their places of origin, be compensated, and hold perpetrators accountable.
He expressed concern that the commission would reconsider its position on human rights abuses, deny the allegations, and undermine the commission's mandate.
