Abdulwahab Mehad escapes from Assosa Prison

An unnamed senior official of the state's chief executive told Addis Maleda newspaper the former army chief Abdulwahab Mehad of Benishangul Gumuz People's Liberation Front (BPLM) has escaped from the Asosa Zone Prison. Abdulwahab, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison, escaped on December 18, 2014.

He had previously been sentenced to life in prison in 2001and escaped from prison and entered Eritrea in 2002 to work with anti-Ethiopian forces.

Due to this he was sentenced by the Federal High Court to 16 years and six months in prison.

Meanwhile, the judge appealed to the federal attorney general and the sentence was reduced to nine years, but the prosecutor disagreed with the sentence and the individual reportedly disappeared during the trial.

It was reported that the individual had not been transferred to other federal institutions in Addis Ababa to be close to his family in the Federal High Court.

The detainee was wanted by the federal and state governments and was under intense surveillance, but his escape from a detention center for the second time in a row indicates that a conspiracy may have taken place, according to an unnamed senior official.

The Benishangul-Gumuz security forces are currently searching for the detainee, but the location is close to Sudan and the man knows the way out and the entrance, where he has been fighting for almost 20 years, he said.

After entering Sudan, the individual may continue to carry out similar acts of terrorism in the districts of Assosa, recruiting and training young people.

Abdulwahab's allies have been wreaking havoc in the region by training scores of youths in Sudan, the official said, adding that the man's escape was a threat to regional peace and security.
